Changing the world

For two weeks in 2021, Glasgow was the focus of the world’s attention as the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) brought 120 world leaders and more than 40,000 participants to the city. The Glasgow Climate Pact it produced was the result of two years of engagement and intense negotiations between 200 countries during the event itself.

More than 100 world leaders made wide-ranging climate commitments at COP26, including:

  • Reducing the use of coal
  • Stopping deforestation in 85% of the world’s woodland by 2030
  • A 30% cut in methane gas emissions by 2030
  • Financial support for developing countries
  • Phasing out fossil fuel subsidies

COP26 was the ultimate example of business events’ ability to act as catalysts for vital social and economic change: bringing the world together to address common challenges and setting the agenda for action on climate change for years to come.

As the largest business event ever staged in Scotland, it also generated important local impacts for the Scottish economy as well as its environment.
