Economic Impact Calculator

This calculator has been provided for event organisers and funders to get a broad feel for the scale of economic impact that an event might achieve. It can also be used for post-event economic impact reporting if you have collected relevant data for an event.

The calculator has four steps. While the calculator is suitable for sporting, cultural and business events, not all steps are relevant to business events. Step 1 is particularly applicable to sporting and cultural events and users should complete all boxes.  Business events are not required to complete Step 1 and can skip to Step 2.

Step 1 requires inputting data about spectators and their expenditure in the host economy. The host economy is the geographical area under consideration for economic impact assessment (e.g. a city, county or region).  The boundary of the host economy will usually be determined by the requirements of the event owner or specific requests by partners including local authorities and funding agencies. Some guidance values for spectators are provided within Step 1 below to enable you to enter reasonable data for your event. You may enter values outside of the recommended range if you have collected more reliable data for your event.

Steps 2,3 and 4 are applicable to sporting, cultural and business events.

Step 2 requires inputting data relating to other event attendees (i.e. excluding spectators) and their expenditure in the host economy. For sporting and cultural events, this could include a broad range of individuals such as participants, staff, volunteers and the media. For business events, this would typically mean delegates.

If your event has on-site vendors from outside the host economy, then relevant data can be entered in Step 3.

Step 4 requires inputting data on event-related organisational spending that occurs in the host economy.

You are advised to read the guidance notes before using the calculator.

If you wish to calculate an estimate of Gross Value Added (GVA) and number of jobs supported in the host economy, you need to enter a region in the Event Details section below.
